Yes, Mary Baker Eddy’s views on woman’s rights were shaped and enveloped by her theological views but the foundation of her contributions does not and should not overshadow their importance. Too many scholars have looked at Mary Baker Eddy through a presentist lens, equating the support of women’s rights with political activism and suffrage. Eddy’s religion developed her views on gender equality, as Voorhees explains. Eddy’s theology, shaped by her life experiences, produced beliefs of gender equality but also of the importance of independence and individualism which kept her from engaging, though not disagreeing with, the political manifestations of the equality movement such as the suffrage movement as led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.
