Nurses are caring for TGNC patients in a variety of settings, and little is known about the perceptions of nurses who are caring for TGNC patients. Purpose: The purpose of this Descriptive Qualitative study was to explore nurses’ perceptions of caring for TGNC patients. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Participants were recruited using snowball sampling. Four colleagues were asked to refer initial participants included in the study. Fifteen Registered Nurses participated in semi-structured interviews to explore their perceptions of caring for TGNC patients. Analysis of the data utilized qualitative descriptive methods. Data was reviewed for thematic emergence. Purnell’s Model for Cultural Competence was utilized to guide the study. Results: Five themes and two subthemes emerged from the data. Themes included communication, bias, education, organizational culture, and patient care. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: TGNC patients are a vulnerable population who are at risk for poor health outcomes. For many participants this is a new experience and there is a sense of feeling out of one’s depth. It is evident from the data that participants’ experiences of working with TGNC individuals are fraught with worry, questions, concerns, and fear. Despite the fear and feelings of incompetence, caring for TGNC patients has awoken in many participants a desire to become more educated, more of an advocate and more culturally competent.
