description: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive, autoimmune disease(Tehlirian & Bathon, 2008). While there are several options for the medical management of RA, there is no cure (Pollard, Choy & Scott, 2005). With the diagnosis of a chronic illness, there are psychosocial factors that should be addressed in conjunction with medical treatment to optimize patient outcomes (Buckley, Vacek, & Cooper, 1990; Reinseth & Espnes, 2007). Support groups are a means of providing peer support as well as understanding the physical and emotional effects of RA (Hill, Weiner & Cudney, 2006; Krol, Sanderman & Suurmeijer, 1993). Improving knowledge and understanding through support groups can improve adaptation to the RA diagnosis and thereby facilitate acceptance (Hill et al., 2006; Krol et al., 1993).
