description: This thesis will analyze two first-person written accounts of the years surrounding World War II by German women, one Jewish and one non-Jewish; an oral history project featuring both Jewish and non-Jewish German women, focused on their wartime experiences and relevant context; and a post on a social media website intended to preserve the memories of a non-Jewish German woman who grew up in the Third Reich and lived through World War II Germany. In doing so, I aim to address the question of how each method and medium of preserving these memories affects the content and reception of each account. Additionally, I analyze each example in the context of existing historical scholarship about women in Germany leading up to and during World War II. Each of these sources, while offering valuable insights about German women’s methods of recording memories, is nonetheless saddled with limitations as well. By examining these three categories in combination with one another, I hope to highlight both the strengths of each medium as well as the ways each method is limited.
