description: In the preface to his 1935 book, Origins of the American College Library, 1638-1800, Louis Shores wrote "One may examine printed sources either in colonial or general educational history in vain for more than a passing mention of college libraries. Nor will one find much more in institutional histories. The reason probably is that libraries so careful in the preservation of all other materials only too frequently have failed to organize and preserve their own library records." Little has changed in the intervening seven decades. With the exception of a handful of articles from the late 1970s, including a very useful bibliographic survey by David Zubatsky, colonial and early national college libraries have failed to attract significant scholarly interest.2 In fact, if we set aside published versions of early printed library catalogs from Harvard and Yale, and a bibliographic catalogue covering certain portions of the library at Dickinson College, Shores‟ book remains the only monograph specifically related to the topic of early American academic libraries.
