For LGBTQ Muslims, the situation is rife with additional complexities due to the nexus of Islamophobia, homonationalism, and racism that they encounter in Western countries. This study consists of a content analysis of seven blogs written by LGBTQ Muslims in order to elucidate the interplay between the construct of the Queer Muslim in Western national imaginaries and LGBTQ Muslims. First of all, LGBTQ Muslims’ experiences are selectively highlighted and effaced to generate the metanarrative of the Queer Muslim in Western national imaginaries. Secondly, the selective incorporation of LGBTQ Muslims into the national imaginary serves two necropolitical purposes for Western nations: demarcating the boundaries of national belonging by regulating queerness and bolstering ideologies of Western exceptionalism. Finally, LGBTQ Muslims navigate the web of discourses in which they are embedded through disidentificatory practices that function as both a present-day survival strategy and a long-term process of queer worldmaking.
