description: The traditional scholarship surrounding Ethan Allen consists of a discussion of the events of his life and the political and military significance of his actions. These are important areas of study. However, they minimize the interactions between Ethan Allen and the society that developed in Vermont. Using records surrounding the remembrance of Ethan Allen in the 19th and early 20th century, this Thesis attempts to explore the interactions between authors and social groups as they attempted to influence the discussions of Ethan Allen to achieve their own goals. This piece is a survey of the Collective Memory of Vermont discussing how the most public-facing aspects of culture was utilized to achieve cultural aims.
