description: In response to an acute nursing shortage, there has been a proliferation of accelerated nursing programs for non-nurse college graduates to become nurses in 12 -18 months, considerably shorter than the typical four-year route to a BSN. Few investigators have considered the best faculty practices for teaching this unique cohort, which is recognized as being different from their traditional counterparts. Researchers have demonstrated that these students are older, consumer-oriented, more challenging, more vocal, and more motivated when compared to traditional undergraduate nursing students. The goal of this qualitative descriptive study was to elicit experienced faculty members’ suggestions for teaching this cohort in the classroom. Sixteen participants who have taught this accelerated cohort were recruited from all five regions of the United States. Systematic content analysis was conducted until data saturation was reached. Themes that emerged were: 1) Have All Your Ducks in a Row; 2) “Let Me Tell You What I Need”; 3) A Different Kind of Relationship; 4) Value Past Life/Work Experiences; 5) ASD Students Learn Differently; and 6) Need Early Role Immersion. While limited in generalizability, the data from this study can inform faculty members about salient issues when selecting teaching methodologies for an accelerated cohort. Additionally, program directors can benefit and plan courses and faculty workloads accordingly.
