description: While focusing on areas with the densest Catholic populations and the most nationally influential clergy is certainly of the utmost importance when relating the history of Catholic America, doing so often obscures smaller and more isolated communities whose experience may differ from the greater population of American Catholics. If the 1925 Supreme Court case marks an important milestone in the history of Catholic America, a better understanding of Oregon’s Catholic educators in the nineteenth century becomes a necessary context for the case. School expansion, education reform, and trends in anti-Catholicism affected the largest Catholic communities in America. While Oregon’s minority of Catholics dealt with many of the same issues as larger communities across the nation, they did so in a different cultural and geographic context.
