Health education that includes condom use is mandatory for all 10th grade students thus raising concern about the rates and elevates the need to explore how health education influences decision-making for condom use.Self-efficacy and communication skills for condom use are known to be strong predictors of condom use. In contrast, an individual’s negative perceptions around condom use are barriers to successful condom use. It was hypothesized that health education should impact these factors that influence teen condom use. The purpose of the present capstone project was to explore how high school health education influences teen condom use self-efficacy, and related communication skills, as well as to explore their perceived barriers to condom use. A mixed methods design was used, including the use of a pre/post course survey, and focus group discussions utilizing a convenience sample of 10th grade students taking the health education course. The survey results showed that health education had a positive impact on attitudes about condom use, condom use self-efficacy, and reduced some barriers to condom use. Focus groups showed that in spite of the positive impact of health education, students still find that barriers exist around condom use (buy and carry), communication skills (insist on condoms or decline intercourse), and miscalculated risk awareness. Results may be used to improve the anticipatory guidance provided by nurse practitioners, as well as to drive improvements in health education curriculum and educational strategies at the local level. Results may also contribute to health education curriculum and teaching strategies designed to more effectively meet students’ needs and lead to improving teen decision-making around condom use.
