description: The Kaufman Speech Praxis Treatment Kit (KSPTK) is a program designed to improve vocal production using phonological processes. Phonological processes are common structure or systematic simplifications of sound sequences, syllables, and words found in early speech. This study examined the effectiveness of echoic training using the phonological breakdowns provided by the KSPTK in improving the vocal production of children with autism. Three children with autism participated across three experiments with multiple probe designs. In all experiments, the independent variable was echoic training using phonological breakdowns. In Experiments 1 and 2 the dependent variable was the number of echoic responses that achieved parity with the adult form of the word. In Experiment 3, the dependent variable was improvement in echoic responses according to by a coding system designed specifically for this study. In Experiment 1 and 2, all participants failed to consistently achieve parity with the adult word form. Post hoc analyses, however, suggested improvements in vocal production following the implementation of the independent variable. In Experiment 3, improvements in echoic responses occurred across all targets and maintained over several sessions. This study extended previous research on echoic training and suggested the importance of systematic methods for measuring improvements in vocal production. Additional research is needed to confirm the tentative conclusion that echoic training using phonological breakdowns is an effective procedure for improving vocal production.
