description: Prior to the mid 20th century, the subject of human remains was not linked to the history discipline as it is now. Rather, human remains were considered to be within the realm of biological scientists, archeologists and physical anthropologists. In fact, some of the earliest scholarly articles written on human remains were prominent in archeology, physical anthropology journals. American physical anthropologists formally discussed human remains that were found in the United States in 1900. These human remains were viewed differently by physical anthropologists who discovered not only were the remains over one hundred years old, but also the remains that were of Norse origin. Interestingly, human remains of Norse origin were described differently from human remains of Native American origin. This was evident in archeologist Gerard Fowke’s article “Points of Difference between Norse Remains and Indian Works Most Closely Resembling Them” published in American Anthropologist 1900. In this article, Fowke discusses the burial sites, buildings, and rock formation of ancient areas in New England. Fowke argued the evidence he collected from these sites from these sites were at least a few hundred years old. Therefore, they predate when the first known Europeans came to the New World.
